Michael Houser
January 6, 1962 – August 10, 2002
Tune in for a birthday celebration of the music of Michael Houser. The show will be both a marathon of music (jam packing as much music into the time slot as possible), and will feature some jams that could be called Marathon Mike because he solos so relentlessly.
The broadcast is on Tuesday, January 6, 2009, at 8PM Central Time on KXUA Fayetteville and Honest.FM

Mikey's Lightnin' old school drawing by Dgold

There will be a mix of pretty instrumental songs (like A of D, Happy Child and West Virginia), and a few classic Widespread Panic live centerpieces (Airplane > Jam, Impossible > Jam, Pigeons). It’s not all jams though, this show is focused on song-writing and the meanings behind Mike’s songs, which are often about his family, or the life of the everyman (Song In My Heart, Postcard, Porch Song).
Many of the songs will have Houser singing, some feature vocalists Danny Hutchens (Bloodkin), Vic Chesnutt (Brute), John Bell (Widespread Panic), Jerry Joseph (Jackmormons). Houser plays on the majority of the tracks, but a couple tracks are songs that he cited as his influences (Yes, and Black Sabbath)
The highlight of the program is a rare, never-before-heard remix of 2 studio demos: Mike Houser singing “Humpy Galumpy” in the studio matched up with an earlier instrumental version of Humpy Galumpy, that only came to light on January 1st of this year (and I remixed the tracks together for continuity myself last night, for the radio show listeners).

Thanks Mikey sticker from the Houser Aspen Shrine

Tune in Tuesday, January 6, 2009, at 8PM Central Time on KXUA! Happy Birthday Houser. Miss you Mikey.
Check back here later for more info, song list, pictures, new rare Widesrpead Panic mp3 download remix of Humpy Galumpy (following first time played on the radio webcast)

NOTES: 8-8-2006 at 8PM Central Time – Tonight on Honest Tunes Radio Show – 3+ Hour feature webcast with all Jimmy Herring jams from bands like Col. Bruce Hampton & the Aquarium Rescue Unit, Allman Brothers Band, Phil Lesh Quintet, The Dead, Little Feat, Frogwings, Gov’t Mule, Widespread Panic, ARU>WSP jam, Jazz Is Dead, Jazz Is Spread, Justice League Of America, Endangered Species, New Earth Mud, Black Crowes, Blues Traveler, Day By The River, Project Z, Derek Trucks Band, The Codetalkers, Herring Rogers Sipe, KVHW, Phish.

Yep, Jimmy has jammed with all-of-the-above, as a member / fill-in / or special guest. I’ll spin selections of my favorites on my radio show tonite.
Widespread Panic in-transition in 2006, announced last week that Jimmy Herring is joining WSP on lead guitar starting at Radio City Music Hall in NYC in September for Fall Tour.
Jimmy Herring photograph by Michael Saba, photo illustration by Daniel Gold, from the Allman Brothers Band show in Kansas City, Summer 2000.
Words to announce:
Fasten your seatbelts, for the next few hours Jimmy Herring plays guitar on every song. Widespread Panic announced on their website that Jimmy Herring will join the band as lead guitarist starting at Radio City Music Hall in September.
Thats a follow up to Jimmys roles subbing for Dicky Betts in the Allman Brothers and the Jerry Garcia Slot in The Dead. But those arent Jimmys original credentials. He is a jazz, rock and fusion guitarist who can play almost any genre of music, as you can hear all genres mixed together in this live concert recording of Col. Bruce Hampton & the Aquarium Rescue Unit.
awesome display of technique from the Nicest guy you’ll ever meet
Find out all the songs and bands tonite on dgold.info/radio
Hope you’re ready to hear Jimmy play with a variety of other artists in different styles
Project Z – improv Herring Sipe and the late great bassist Ricky Keller. Sipe from ARU, out touring now with another band HRS and we’ll hear from them later in the program
This is their self-titled debut, they also managed to complete a posthumous album Lincoln Memorial on Terminus Records
Jimmy cover song Fusion Tribute >”Meeting of the Spirits”
Endanger Species – jimmy original credits
Doesn’t matter what style of music whether it’s bluegrass funk rock, or jazz fusion, you can always tell it’s Herring on guitar by his clear tone and his unique touch. But one thing you don’t hear often is Jimmy on acoustic like he plays on this Endangered Species “Folley”

In 2005, the growing Honest Tunes podcast received some cool honors. Colonel Bruce Hampton showed up to play out on the radio show, and then Derek Trucks stopped by for an interview. These are some of my favorite musicians and personalities. This blog post contains a short excerpt from the complete Derek Trucks interview audio, in which Derek refers to a phone call from Jimmy Herring and Col. Bruce about the Codetalkers’ earlier (first, 2005) appearance on Honest Tunes podcast. Really I just attached this Derek Trucks promo clip because I wanted to put this newspaper article text in the Podcast category but I didn’t have an audio file for it right now, so this is a bonus mp3 for you that I’m adding in 2008.
Next, the statewide newspaper (the Arkansas Democrat Gazette, which I’ve read in one form or another for most of my life), wrote an article about podcasting using Arkansas podcasters for the case studies and interview quotes. I was very proud to represent the college radio, independent music, and mp3 blog side of podcasting, and to get some quotes in the paper about the projects I am interested in with honest tunes.
Here are excerpts of the article from an E-mail Forwarded article from Arkansas Online ..
This story was published in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette statewide newspaper Sunday, October 23, 2005, on the front page of Section E: Style, and on http://www.ardemgaz.com/ the newspaper’s website. The headline was “POD People” with subheadline “Internet audio files that listeners can download and carry around give musicians, believers and bloggers a way to get the music or the message out. It’s called podcasting.”
Four Arkansas podcasters are introduced. In the introduction, “Daniel Gold [podcasts] to promote… bluegrass and improvisational rock.” Later in the article, Honest Tunes ‘ sources of podcast-safe music are explained: “Gold, whose podcasts focus on live recordings and independent bands, asks band members before recording them. For supplemental material, he turns to the Internet Archives, which offers music under Creative Common Licenses. These licenses are a more flexible form of copyright that can allow podcasters to use material without having to pay the high licensing fees that often accompany mainstream commercial material.” In the subsection, “Why Podcast?,” the newspaper says…
In the subsection, “Why Podcast?,” the newspaper says “Gold of Fayetteville uses the podcast from his KXUA-FM, 88.3, radio show to reach fellow lovers of roots music and to promote Honest Tune, a magazine he co-authors with Tom Speed of Oxford, Miss.” Another section of the article addresses the relationship of traditional FM radio and podcasting. “‘Commercial radio is a wasteland. There’s nothing there anymore, and people want to listen to something else during their day,’ Jay King [of audiolingo] said. Others still find positive aspects to radio, and even use podcasting to expand coverage of their radio shows. Gold said he has shared recordings of his radio show over the Internet since 2002. Two years later, he discovered how to add RSS information to the MP3 audio files, turning them into podcasts. Gold sees his radio show podcasts as a form of preservation. “It lets any citizen be an archivist of audio,” he said. Wiles tuned into satellite radio before becoming an avid podcast listener. But he feels there is still a niche for traditional radio. Radio stations offer local content that satellite radio and podcasts don’t. ‘I think traditional radios, if they’re smart, will stick as much local content in there as they can,’ he said. Rather than fighting podcasting, many broadcasters are embracing it.
