Incandescent Devil

I got dressed for church on Sunday
I went down to the river instead
I wrote a letter to my preacher
I left it on the shore and jumped on in

Oh my Incandescent Devil
Last chance gas station
Smell of perfume fading
Another night’s gone by

Well the fish swim by like there’s tomorrow
Or a great big lake in the middle of the mountain
And a salty sea that’s never ending
And a river and a stream to get between them

Oh my Incandescent Devil
Last chance gas station
Smell of perfume fading
Another night’s gone by

Well they teach us to read so we heed the advertisements
And this country will grow by dollars, dimes and quarters
While a bucket of blood is filling up my gas tank
And I fly my flag I’m running the colors

Oh my Incandescent Devil
Last chance gas station
Smell of perfume fading
Another night’s gone by

  1. Dgold Says:

Incandescent Devil’s “A bucket of blood is filling up my gas-tank” reminds me of Gasaholic (“gasoline drips from your faucet”), as well as I’ve Been Seeking (“building up their empires made from blood and bone and fire”). It even calls to mind the early version of the words to Deep River. In this respect Incadescent Devil seems to have environmentalist and humanist/justice connotations. Just one of many meanings you might hear in this song.

  2. Dgold Says:

Quite surprising that this song was not on Taught To Be Proud, since it became a summer anthem before the album about the same time as the title-track. I heard there is an out-take of Incandescent Devil recorded for T2BP.

  3. Dgold Says:

The first time Warren Haynes sat in with TLG, they played Incadescent Devil with Warren on slide guitar.

  4. OB Says:

added verse from the 1/20/05 Cafe du Nord show:

The Bella Donna keeps me guessin’
While the kids are out caressin’
At the bridge on top and under
Eatin’ the wheat that makes them s-s-s-studder

    Oh incandescent devil
    last chance gas station…

  7. gstew87 Says:

Trevor is alluding to the ever-imposing end of time. It’s as if he is serenading an energy inefficient incandescent light bulb.
It’s out there plain and simple: we sit around, for the most part, and fuck with all of our different addictions and make ourselves slaves to international corporate entities and banks, happy as shit because we don’t realize, or even care, that the world is ending.
