Harvest Time
No one knows how long we been knocked out
They seem to think we started (?)
and I can’t say that they’re wrong
Broken chairs and splintered wood
Cannot tell a lie
Why would I do something like that?
When it’s harvesting, harvest-time
Weighing heavy on my mind
Yeah I’m ready, my eyes shine
I’m gonna cut the fruit from the vine
Alcohol and hard work sometimes do not get along
You think your friends are with you
Yet you find out you were wrong
You just pretend that you don’t care but that would be a lie
Why would I do something like that?
When it’s harvesting, harvest-time
Weighing heavy on my mind
But I’m ready – my eyes shine
I’m gonna cut the fruit from the vine
I’m an old criminal
Been fighting in this bar-room since I was 12 years old
Been up that river bout a dozen times
And I can’t get by without harvesting
A mess like this with you is just so typical
You always cause me trouble
But I always cause you more
But right now it’s not fair
I’m trying act my best
And the rest of you have failed the test
And it’s harvesting, harvest-time
Weighing heavy on my mind
And I’m ready, my eyes do shine
I’m gonna cut the fruit from the vine
It’s harvesting time!
And it’s weighing on my mind
But I’m ready, my eyes shine
I’m gonna cut the fruit from the vine, cut the fruit from the vine
It’s harvestin’ time

First TLG song i ever heard… Trevor has a way with words that grabbed me and didn’t let go… this song creates great imagery and has an amazing feel

This tune can really speak to you in a number of ways. One of the beauties of a lot of Trevor’s writing is his ability to leave songs open to the interpretation of the listener. Here, what does the fruit being cut from the vine represent? Who knows, and that’s why it’s such a good lyric.
I think the comparison of the lyric “You think your friends are with you/Yet you find out you were wrong” from this tune with “My friends are always on the wrong side/And I’m always just a little bit tired of them” from “Don’t Let it Down” provides quite an image.

Here’s how I’ve been playing this.
Verse:
Em-G-C-D-G
Pre-Chorus:
Am-B-C
Chorus:
G-F-C-D
Bridge:
B-Em-C-G (x2)
B-Em-G-B7-Em-G-C-(D) –> Then right into chorus…
G-F-C-D –> Finish out, repeating this progression, throwing in 7th chords
whenever you feel like it.

It can be interpreted in different ways, but overall I think it’s a smoke song. “Cut that fruit from the vine…ready for my eyes to shine”…you know what they harvest in San Fran

What a great TLG classic – Trevor I think is talking about friends and relationships, sometimes they go sour and it’s time to move on. I love the intro where he sings about how they wake up unconscious, busted crap all over, and no one has a clue what happened?
