Earth and Sky

I don’t plant crops and
I don’t build fences
I don’t ride on railroads
And I don’t dig trenches

I’m living in between
The earth and sky

I don’t go to school
I don’t go to churches
I don’t visit graveyards
I don’t know the purpose of ‘em

I’m living in between
The earth and sky

Following phone lines
To good times and bad times
Under the starlight
Under the moon
Shining down on me
Shining down on me

I’d write letters
But I’d never send ‘em
The post script on ‘em
Is never ending

I’m living in between
The earth and sky
I’m living in between
The earth and sky

There’s only one thing that Trevor sings about actually doing in this song (following phone lines). The rest is either things that aren’t done or are hypothetical (writting letters). I think this creates a really good image of being in a spot where you’re not sure what to do. Following the phone lines to me represents just taking the course that life leaves you, but you don’t know where that will actually be. You only know that it will be something (phonelines always go somewhere, you can follow them if you get really lost).

I also think the imagry of the starlight and moonlight gives this song a bit of a witching hour aspect like many other tunes (Reservoir, Rattlin’, etc.). Everything seems so much different at night, with shapes taking form as they come in and out of shadows. This adds to the air of confusion in the song, but the song ultimately shows that where you can go is the path you have living in between the earth & sky (perhaps the natural and the supernatural). Some great lyrics, which can be read many different ways, and as a result will never lose meaning.
