Don’t Let it Down
Don’t let them fool you into thinking
Fool you into thinking that
You were only listening to
Fast times and money in your pockets
When money in your pockets
don’t even make a sound at all
and that’s true but don’t you ever feel that
don’t you ever feel that you could make a real bad
man if you wanted to I never really wanted to
but sometimes I just feel it’s true
I don’t know what I could do…
[Chorus x2]
Don’t let it down
If you think That’s it’s good
If you think That you should
Do right…
My baby doesn’t really like me
No she doesn’t really like me and
I think that she’s just playing around
With me and everyone around her
Ya everyone around her is just a little play thing
And that’s true, no, how could it be true
I don’t think it’s really true at all
We’ve just been running round each other
Running round each other
And we’re waiting for the first to fall
[Chrorus x2]
Don’t let it down
If you think That’s it’s good
If you think That you should
Do right…
I don’t know how it’d be if we were alone
I don’t care anymore it’s beside the point
[repeat]
How come I never get tired of her
Although she’s on the wrong side
My friends are always on the wrong side
And I’m always just a little bit tired of them
I guess the meaning of holding on
Is what you’re holding out against
Fast times, pretty things, and green grass growing
Illusions that are pulling us apart..
[Chorus x3]
Don’t let it down
If you think That’s it’s good
If you think That you should
Do right…

The lyrics always hit me hard on this one. “I guess the meaning of holding on / Is what you’re holding out against” is classic Trevor poetry, to me.

One of the alltime great songs to listen to at night in the dark through headphones. This song is one of many that shows the real difference between TLG and many other jambands lyrically. I read it as saying even when everyone around you seems against you, even if your girl doesn’t even like you, you should still do what you think is good, what you think you should. Ultimately, by the end of the song, it just lifts you up and leaves you with a smile on your face. Unfortunately, it seems to be a rarely played song and is yet to be released on a studio recording.

“I Believe” is more of a shouter song, a positive affirmation of the connection between the two. “Don’t Let It Down” comes across more plaintively, seeking reconciliation. Both songs seem to wind up with togetherness. The 2 songs have parallel language in these lines, about running circles around one another, maybe playing games. It’s just one little part of the songs, that presents a similar image.
Lovers circle each other as if ring-around-the-rosy, merry-go-round, as if predators circling prey, both chasing and hiding from each other. In “I Believe” Trevor sings: “Even though we move around, and trip and fall, go up and down and side to side, run and hide, we tell the truth until we lie: I believe in you and me, and everything that’s lying up in between.”
In “Don’t Let It Down” Trevor sings: “My baby doesn’t really like me, no she doesn’t really like me and I think that she’s just playing around with me. Everyone around her is just a little plaything. That’s true? No, how could it be true? I don’t think it’s really true at all. We’ve just been running ’round each other — running ’round each other, and waiting for the first to fall. Don’t let it down if you think that it’s good.”

Favorite Trev song, but one lyrical correction
It’s:
“My friends are always on the right** side”
