The refrain of this song ("I'm down in a hole...") has to be one of Trevor's greatest songwriting achievements. He builds up the tension to it so well and releases it perfectly. If only the song went into the refrain more than once...

sugapablo, I think it is just a note run rather than a chord run. It is the first 4 notes of the A scale. You could play the chords A Bm C#m D, but it probably sounds better just playing the notes A B C# D instead.

I like the Dm7 Bb better, but in most of the recordings I have, they use F Bb

Intro: F Bb x 3
            F A

Verse: Dm E dim F Bb Eb A Dm x2

Interlude: F Bb G C
               A D G C D

Chorus: G C D G x3
                Cm

The 2-18-2001 show in San Fran has a great version of The Garden (Part I)!!

Lost fans: listen to this song! There's so many parallels, it's kind of eerie. I love the lyric where Trevor sings "Don't be soulless..."

What a great TLG classic - Trevor I think is talking about friends and relationships, sometimes they go sour and it's time to move on. I love the intro where he sings about how they wake up unconscious, busted crap all over, and no one has a clue what happened?

It can be interpreted in different ways, but overall I think it's a smoke song. "Cut that fruit from the vine...ready for my eyes to shine"...you know what they harvest in San Fran

went down to st. james in ______
see my baby there,
shes lying on a long white table, so cool so calm so fair

yeah 16 cold* black horses hitched to a double in hand*
seven girls went to the graveyard only 6 of them ever come back

let her go let her go god bless her
let her go where she may be
cause you can search the whole world over now
but you'll never find a man like me

but if i die wont you please bury me with with my hitop steps* in hand* with a gold piece on my watch chain so they know i died a standin man*
get six gamblers to carry my coffin
get 6 chors girls to sing me a song
get a jazz band to play at my tailgate baby

The title implies ownership by the Sea Monkeys although the object of ownership is not mentioned.

The A B E A F#m is all pretty straightforward, but I sure wish I had the time and the skill to tab out the middle-end where it becomes much more complex than IV-V-I-ii

(INTRO)
Em / Am / Em / C / Em / B / Em

(VERSE 1)

Em Am
My sweetest love

Em
Forever I’ve known

Em Am B D
Cause I am a truck driving man

Em Am
I’ve driven these roads

Em C
From coast to coast

Em B Em
Seen every corner of the land

(VERSE 2)
Down in the south
I had a gal
Whose daddy was as rich as a king
She begged me to stay
Offerin’ me the world
If I would only buy her a ring

(CHORUS)
         G
I said, “I’ve got a truck

C
And a trailer to haul

G B E D C
And a heart that can only be true”

G B E D C
I scorned the love of a rich man’s daughter

G C B A G
All for the love of you

(VERSE 3)
I could have been
A company man
Watched the work get done
I could have even been the president
After her daddy passed on

(CHORUS)
But I’ve got a truck with a trailer to haul
And a heart that can only be true
I scorned the heart of a rich man’s daughter
All for the love of you

(SOLO... Same as Verse)

(VERSE 4)
So come away with me
I’ve got all that we need
If the highway is my kingdom you can be my queen
But we really gotta hurry
I owe that rich girl some money
And I hear her daddy’s looking for me -
[but it’s not my child!]

(CHORUS)
But I’ve got a truck and a trailer to haul
And a heart that can only be true
I scorned the heart of a rich man’s daughter
All for the love of you
(REPEAT CHORUS)
I’ve got a truck and a trailer to haul
And a heart that can only be true
I scorned the love of a rich man’s daughter
All for the love of you

All for the love of you
All for the love of you

In a <a href="http://www.tealeafgreen.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=13228" rel="nofollow">Forum post in 2005</a>, Flipper (aka Bip alias Josh Clark) wrote about the origins of Jezebel:

<em>Actually it began with a picture that my friend Josh drew. It was called "Jacobs Garden", from there many creatures emerged. The antagonist who has yet to reveal himself goes by the name of <strong>"qwali"</strong> and he quards a fountain which is a port hole to other such vagaries. In fact there was a song probably played live once or twice back in 1998 called "gwalis fountain", not to be confused with "Jezebel" who resides at the wishing well. Hope that's confusing enough for you.

The 1st paragraph is wrong, its:

:trevor:
back when the age was young
firm apples grew
sweet blossoms bloomed
:trevor:
even your lies
ran with the truth
but there was no disguise
that covers our youth
covers our youth
alive in the night
our parents would be so surprised
so surprised

here comes a boy
hes drunk off of junk
happy and proud
to be so in love
the eagles fly high
and sleeps in the sky
no dust or mud
can make this love die
make this love die
alive in the night
her parents would be so surpsied
so surprised

but her parents back home
would never approve
couldnt lose
their little girl
so she snuck out each night
doin the worst she can
cause there's no man
to stop the boy that i am

alive in the night
her parents would be so surprised
so surprised (x5)

just a beautiful song yet again

I interpret the line referring to "killing" and "style" in the manner that style was destroyed with the moral life lead, it was to a virtue to her personally, while other veiwed her in the physical sense of the word style.

I'm pretty sure its the roses are growing on the hound dogs bounds not a hound dog is growing on the hound dogs bones

Also I believe for the first time during the april steve tour 2008 and every now and then they have down a kind of acapella chorus at the end. During that steve tour they also changed the key this song was in.

What a beautiful song.
I was looking up Orestes and I had always associated it with the Greek mythology, but it never really fit with the song.
I think a much better fit would be Orestes, Indiana a small town in rural Indiana.
"Dreams of Orestes
Bring it down, rebuild,
but there’s miles of silos
of missiles waiting to spill
into the sky
We all fade
collapse, and decay
and we’re taken away
at the end of the day"

Also the fact that it fits in segue with Crop Duster makes me think its about a small farm town not a Greek myth.

Would be a great CBB song in Baltimore.

Any thoughts on your interpretation?

I was looking up Orestes and I had always associated it with the Greek mythology, but it never really fit with the song.
I think a much better fit would be Orestes, Indiana a small town in rural Indiana.
“Dreams of Orestes
Bring it down, rebuild,
but there’s miles of silos
of missiles waiting to spill
into the sky
We all fade
collapse, and decay
and we’re taken away
at the end of the day”

Also the fact that it fits in segue with Crop Duster makes me think its about a small farm town not a Greek myth.

Would be a great CBB song in Baltimore.

Any thoughts on your interpretation?

On 11/7/04, Trevor announces the song saying that he wrote it in Death Valley. Awesome place to go with these words.

Favorite Trev song, but one lyrical correction

It's:
"My friends are always on the right** side"

You scream
They don’t like us

it is not that, it is

It's clear
They don't like us

Also, this whole verse is messed up:

Let’s go to Reno
Before the solstice
My cousin’s got a farm
And I’m from there
I hear the state’s building a prison next door
And they won’t find much more.

It is:
Let's go to Reno
Before it snows there
My cousin's got a farm
An Hour away
I hear the state's building a prison right next door
And they wont farm there much more

(See how he mentioned his cousins farm prior) makes much more sense
