The refrain of this song (”I’m down in a hole…”) has to be one of Trevor’s greatest songwriting achievements. He builds up the tension to it so well and releases it perfectly. If only the song went into the refrain more than once…

sugapablo, I think it is just a note run rather than a chord run. It is the first 4 notes of the A scale. You could play the chords A Bm C#m D, but it probably sounds better just playing the notes A B C# D instead.

In a Forum post in 2005, Flipper (aka Bip alias Josh Clark) wrote about the origins of Jezebel:

Actually it began with a picture that my friend Josh drew. It was called “Jacobs Garden”, from there many creatures emerged. The antagonist who has yet to reveal himself goes by the name of “qwali” and he quards a fountain which is a port hole to other such vagaries. In fact there was a song probably played live once or twice back in 1998 called “gwalis fountain”, not to be confused with “Jezebel” who resides at the wishing well. Hope that’s confusing enough for you.

I’m pretty sure its the roses are growing on the hound dogs bounds not a hound dog is growing on the hound dogs bones

Also I believe for the first time during the april steve tour 2008 and every now and then they have down a kind of acapella chorus at the end. During that steve tour they also changed the key this song was in.

What a beautiful song.
I was looking up Orestes and I had always associated it with the Greek mythology, but it never really fit with the song.
I think a much better fit would be Orestes, Indiana a small town in rural Indiana.

Also the fact that it fits in segue with Crop Duster makes me think its about a small farm town not a Greek myth.
