Although a D7 chord does have a C in it, the D7 doesn’t sound right. The resolution is definitely C# dim to C major.

I think the verse resolves in a D7 rather than a C….iIve been playing along with the song on piano and the C just doesn’t sound right. Coming from the C#dim I just drop my finger on the left side of each hand down one key to get the D7. So the D7 chord I am playing is made up of the single notes (from left to right) d-F#-c. This to me sounds right on!

These lyrics for some reason remind me of the Grateful Dead – probably the allusions to death and gambling.

The main part of the song has always made me think that the main character is just a guy that’s talkin’ sh*t at some bar – he’s bragging about his truck and how a rich girl wanted to marry him (and how he’d be the president of the her dad’s company), but his concience got in the way (all for the love of you…). Great lyrics as always!

hes fast picking some chords from 4:20+, it might be the main theme C-Dm-Em-F—not sure, it ends on C–>at 4:48 he goes G mixolydian….the C on fret 17 is the beginning note- the G on fret 20 or high15 is used for as I’d say “the climax of beauty”—there’s some fancy pulloffs and a couple bends- all right within the notes of G mixolydian—-G mix ends the song

John..thanks so much for getting back to me with the chords, I love this song. Lyrics are tough to dissect but my best guess would be that its about someone who finds a strong connection with nature and in turn distant and misunderstood from the real world. They could be very literal but I’m sure Trevor wrote them with deeper meaning.

The refrain of this song (“I’m down in a hole…”) has to be one of Trevor’s greatest songwriting achievements. He builds up the tension to it so well and releases it perfectly. If only the song went into the refrain more than once…

sugapablo, I think it is just a note run rather than a chord run. It is the first 4 notes of the A scale. You could play the chords A Bm C#m D, but it probably sounds better just playing the notes A B C# D instead.
