Although a D7 chord does have a C in it, the D7 doesn't sound right. The resolution is definitely C# dim to C major.

I think the verse resolves in a D7 rather than a C....iIve been playing along with the song on piano and the C just doesn't sound right. Coming from the C#dim I just drop my finger on the left side of each hand down one key to get the D7. So the D7 chord I am playing is made up of the single notes (from left to right) d-F#-c. This to me sounds right on!

Jam and Outro goes back and forth between Fm and A# :trevor:

Addressing The Community, will we ever hear it again? Ben C attended the recent 12-2010 holiday show but did not come up for a guest rap. Hope he comes back out with TLG again sometime soon, as a guest appearance.

Connor - also he sings the extra lyrics in the 5/21/09 show at the 8x10 Club.

Went down to St. James Infirmary
See my baby there
She's lying on a long white table
So cool, so calm, so fair

Well I went up to see the doctor
She's very old he said (?)
Went down to see my baby
Good God, she's lying dead

Well you can take 17 cold black horses
And your double-tied hag (?)
Seven girls went down to the graveyard
Six of them ever came back

So let her go, let her go, God bless her
Let her go where she may be
You can search the whole world over now
But you'll never find a man like me

Well if I should die won't you please bury me
With my high top Stetson hat
Put a gold piece on my watch chain
So they'll know that I died standin' pat

Get six gamblers to carry my coffin
Get six chorus girls to sing this song
Get a jazz band to play all my (?)
To raise hell as I'm move along

******

These lyrics for some reason remind me of the Grateful Dead - probably the allusions to death and gambling.

The main part of the song has always made me think that the main character is just a guy that's talkin' sh*t at some bar - he's bragging about his truck and how a rich girl wanted to marry him (and how he'd be the president of the her dad's company), but his concience got in the way (all for the love of you...). Great lyrics as always!

guitar solo-

hes fast picking some chords from 4:20+, it might be the main theme C-Dm-Em-F---not sure, it ends on C-->at 4:48 he goes G mixolydian....the C on fret 17 is the beginning note- the G on fret 20 or high15 is used for as I'd say "the climax of beauty"---there's some fancy pulloffs and a couple bends- all right within the notes of G mixolydian----G mix ends the song

John..thanks so much for getting back to me with the chords, I love this song. Lyrics are tough to dissect but my best guess would be that its about someone who finds a strong connection with nature and in turn distant and misunderstood from the real world. They could be very literal but I'm sure Trevor wrote them with deeper meaning.

Clay, I'll help ya out with the chords if you help me out with what the lyrics mean

I need to spend some more time working out the finer details, but this is very close. I tabbed it based on this video http://www.youtube.com/user/trevorgarrod1#p/a/u/0/iv5DXoYGXc8

Intro they sometimes play: F C E A

verse: Dm E A x3 C E A x 2

solo stays around A and Amaj7, then goes to Dm, then Dm/A

then eventually goes to F C E A

Then back to verse Dm E A

Not sure if Em is Em7 or some other crazy chord. Still sounds good in Em.
Timing is a little jumpy in this song.

Unless I'm hallucinating, I believe that after the line (or lyric) "they all have a light to shine" is the line "WE all have a light to shine" which is repeated two times.

For what it's worth, the fourth stanza is clearly inspired by Robert Frost's "Fire and Ice," which was reportedly inspired by an astronomer's theories as to how the world will end:

Interview and duo-acoustic version of "Goodbye Mary / Hello Jane" from K-CMV radio. Josh and Trevor. At the end, the DJ gets Trevor to tell the story behind the song.

The refrain of this song ("I'm down in a hole...") has to be one of Trevor's greatest songwriting achievements. He builds up the tension to it so well and releases it perfectly. If only the song went into the refrain more than once...

sugapablo, I think it is just a note run rather than a chord run. It is the first 4 notes of the A scale. You could play the chords A Bm C#m D, but it probably sounds better just playing the notes A B C# D instead.

I like the Dm7 Bb better, but in most of the recordings I have, they use F Bb

Intro: F Bb x 3
            F A

Verse: Dm E dim F Bb Eb A Dm x2

Interlude: F Bb G C
               A D G C D

Chorus: G C D G x3
                Cm

The 2-18-2001 show in San Fran has a great version of The Garden (Part I)!!

Lost fans: listen to this song! There's so many parallels, it's kind of eerie. I love the lyric where Trevor sings "Don't be soulless..."

What a great TLG classic - Trevor I think is talking about friends and relationships, sometimes they go sour and it's time to move on. I love the intro where he sings about how they wake up unconscious, busted crap all over, and no one has a clue what happened?

It can be interpreted in different ways, but overall I think it's a smoke song. "Cut that fruit from the vine...ready for my eyes to shine"...you know what they harvest in San Fran
