Can’t Get High
There’s no easy way to say
Didn’t even leave the house today
I think I thought a lot of you
And how the windowpane is in my way
I don’t have soap or else I’d clean it
Got no hope, or else I’d end it right now
Summer’s broke, I knew it wouldn’t last this long
Take it easy, take it slow
Easy come and easy go
I’m waiting, hesitating here for you
Are we through, or is it gonna grow?
Oh, I’ve got no patience, I’m laying on the horn
I’m feeling ancient, and you haven’t even been born
Summer’s aching, I knew it wouldn’t take this long
I can’t get high
I can’t stay low
I will get by
I will stay home
I will stay home
They could take all of my money
They could burn my house down to the ground
I could fake it like the government
I could make it for the man
Got some time that you’re wasting
It’s not right just to say it in a song
The summer’s breaking, how could this all be taking
Summer’s aching, I knew this would be taking
Summer’s broke, I knew it wouldn’t last this long
I can’t get high
I can’t stay low
I will get by
I will stay home
I will stay home
I will stay home

There’s something so heartbreaking about this song, and very thought-provoking. Like so many of Trevor’s lyrics, this is like a love song wrapped up in philosophical filo dough. For some reason, for me this song evokes thoughts of a person with bi-polar disorder who is compliant with his/her medication, and is unhappy about it, begrudingly proceeding with life devoid of color.

this song sounds like a broken heart after getting let down from summer love.

Heard this song live and have listened to it numerous times, but it wasn’t untill today that I realized its beauty. These lyrics are some of Trevor’s best. I think it really resonates the empty feeling of a broken heart. Sometimes life is just so hard that you just want to “stay home”. This may be my favorite lyrical work by TLG.
